The Conservatoire du littoral is a public institute which was created in 1975. The objective of its land management is the permanent protection of natural spaces and landscapes bordering seas and lakes, and it is able to intervene in coastal areas on the mainland. It purchases vulnerable or threatened land through mutual agreement, preemption, or rarely, expropriation. It can also be donated or bequeathed land. After the necessary restoration work, the land is given over to communes, local authorities or associations, for them to manage within the spirit of the agreed guidelines.
