THREATS

According to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Hermann’s tortoise western subspecies (Testudo hermanni ssp. Hermanni) is in the "EN" (endangered) (endangered by definition means: facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild).

The Var populations them fall into the category "endangered".

As with other endangered species, this situation is caused by a convergence of factors threat whose intensity varies according to the site.


These threats can be classified into three groups:

 

- Habitat destruction and degradation

- Direct destruction of individuals

- Taking in the wild, captivity and releasing captive-bred individuals
